Everyone would like to have batteries with a long shelf life. Such type of batteries is less harmful to the environment as you don’t have to dispose them quickly. However you can also take a small step towards buying batteries. Instead of the normal batteries you can buy rechargeable batteries such as NiMH. The special batteries and chargers can be bought from any local store. You can charge and use these batteries at least 100 times before they finally wear out. While at present there are no batteries with unlimited power on the shelves, they will be available shortly in the next few years.
In case you want to sustain the environment then you can go for eco friendly batteries such as sugar powered batteries. These batteries last longer than lithium batteries and they are environmental friendly.
Then there are the lightweight biodegradable batteries which have an excellent lifespan. Researchers from MIT have made a breakthrough in biodegradable batteries. These batteries are paper thin and they include components such as silicon substrate, cellulose, electrolytes and carbon nanotubes.
On the other hand scientists at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology are almost on the breakthrough of inventing a battery that can last for thousands of hours before it wears down. This is not exactly called as an infinite battery but it is certainly an impressive invention. The battery will help cut down on pollution of the environment as wastes will be less. These batteries are made from oxygen and silicon. They are very lightweight and safe. However we will have to wait and watch how these batteries fare when they are commercially produced for the public.
There are more than a dozen other companies who claim to make a breakthrough in longer lasting batteries. Each and every time a long lasting battery is showcased another company jumps in the bandwagon to claim that its battery can last more. Hence it is just a question of race as to which company will produce an everlasting battery but it will not be long before we see such an invention commercially produced and marketed. In the meanwhile you will just have to settle for ways in which you can increase the longevity of your battery.
