Let the sun charge your phone

It is often observed that many times we get irritated when our cell phone just gets powered off when we are in the midst of an important conversation. We have to then charge our phone with a charger by plugging it to an electricity source. All this is going to change now as the Nokia Research Center is working in England to come up with a self charging phone. Seems too good to be true? Then read on.

Self Charging Cell Phone

The new system developed by Nokia will be able to collect energy from ambient radio waves which will be emitted by TV masts, antennas or Wi-Fi transmitters.

This technology is not new as it has been used in some stores for security since the last few years. For example, RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) has been installed in many stores to detect and prevent theft. The same technology is now tested by Nokia to catch the same radio waves and then harness the power from them to power cell phones.

The current target for the new technology is producing about 50 milliwatts of power though the current rate is just 5 milliwatts which is not enough to power a cell phone. A phone will need a minimum of about 20 milliwatts of power. The French researchers are today working on 3 models out of which one model generates power simply by opening and closing it. The other two models can be worn by people around their wrist and the neck.
